Our November Members meeting speaker, Tuesday, November 28th, was local artist Louis Copt.
ARTIST BIO: Louis Copt grew up on a farm in Emporia, Kansas. Flint Hills had a profound effect on him which translated into his passion for landscape painting of big skies and the spring fire burnings of the local prairie.
He has an Art Degree from Emporia State University; studied with notable artists: Jim Brothers, Robert Sudlow, Robert Green, Robert Brawley and Stan Herd. He became a full-time artist in 1985 after returning from a summer of study at the Art Students League in New York City. His work focuses on the prairie annual spring burn-off in the Flint Hills working primarily in oil, but also in watercolor.
2016, Louis was the featured artist in the Lawrence Arts Center’s Annual Benefit Auction, showcasing a series of paintings and cast glass sculptures of Kansas barns. He has been featured in The Artist’s Magazine, the American Artist Magazine and the American Art Review. In 2011 he was the Kansas Governor’s Artist. He has taught at the Lawrence Arts Center over 25 years and led travel/painting workshops to France, Spain and Italy. He occasionally teaches drawing and painting classes at the University of Kansas. He has served on many art organization boards and is active in several community service projects.
Louis Copt shows in galleries throughout the Midwest - Leopold Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri, the Reuben Saunders Gallery in Wichita, Kansas, the Strecker-Nelson Gallery in Manhattan, Kansas, and the Phoenix Gallery in Lawrence, Kansas. He has participated in national juried shows, and his work is collected by people throughout the world. His work appears in the Wichita Art Museum, Kansas State University’s Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph and Spencer Museum of Art at University of Kansas.

Guest Speaker: Mark Clarke
Twenty-one TAG members were in the Topeka Art Guild Gallery on Tuesday night. After a brief business meeting lead by Vice President Courtney Armstrong, Mark Clarke did a marvelous presentation on Photography.
I took a lot of notes...and learned a lot.... but I don't want this article to sound like a book report!
Mark's enthusiasm and professionalism made the hour go by too quickly! We all enjoyed the variety of images shared. One of the "slides" that brought about the biggest reaction is the one shown in the lower right corner of the little collage above: 48 setting buttons that make up the possible camera settings a photographer must consider when taking a photo!
Another much-discussed slide was the illustration of the "golden spiral."
Other topics included some very technical terms, ethics, and permission...

May 2023A very large group of members attended the monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 23. The featured speaker was Appolonia Jamison. Many framed pictures were shown, with an emphasis on harmonious colors and professional techniques and materials. Appolonia began by showing an early piece with an unfinished back, and then shared many more beautifully-framed pieces. She surprised the group by disassembling a framed oil painting, so that all could see the various layers of materials used. |

Appolonia Jamison May 23, 2023
Growing up in Hungary, Appolonia Jamison soon learned that the arts were an integral part of her native country's educational system. That background gave her a solid understanding of the visual and performing arts. Today, whether she is painting a Kansas landscape or performing as a vocal soloist in her church, she shines with talent and a lifelong love of the arts, built on those early experiences.
After moving to the United States and raising a family, Appolonia continued to hone her painting skills. She also is a skilled craftswoman who for the past eight years* has supervised the picture framing studio at Frameworks of Topeka and has developed a reputation as one of the leading designers in the field.
